The good thing is there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Read on for all our tips and tricks...

PAYMENT FRAUD

Push Payment

Fraud happens when you are scammed into sending a fraudster money. They convince you to make a real-time (immediate) payment by pretending to be someone that you would usually pay money to - for example, a company, service, or someone offering false investment. These scams are generally done via social media channels. Once you've made the payment, your funds are immediately withdrawn, and you've been scammed.

Advance Fee/Deposit Request

This is when you're asked to pay a fee up front for a transaction to go through, or to receive a service or claim a prize or inheritance. These payment requests can be in the form of a deposit, tax, or service fee.

DEALS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE

Purchase Scams

A purchase scam is when you're offered awesome savings on products or services. Once you make the payment, the product or service is never delivered, or if it is, it's not what was advertised. To make things worse, if it was an online transaction, your personal and payment details are also phished.

Online Shopping scams

A scammer creates a fake online store or copies a popular online store you often shop at. They then advertise popular items and services, sometimes even advertising specials on internet browsers like Google, or social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp). Once you visit the fake store and make a purchase, your credit card and personal details are phished. The transaction maybe successfully processed, so it appears to be an actual purchase, but the items are not delivered, your money is not refunded and in most cases the company cannot be contacted.

PHISHING, VISHING, AND SMISHING

These 3 all have the same goal - to get your personal info and use it for identity theft, accessing your finances, or taking over your accounts. It's done through fake emails, SMSs, or phone calls. A scammer contacts you though one of these channels pretending to work for your bank (or a similar organisation) asking you to update your contact details, usernames, and passwords. Once they've done this, they can access your banking profile.

Vishing

A scammer calls you pretending to be a trusted source and asks you for your personal information.

Smishing

Smishing is gaining your personal info through SMS. The SMS will look like it's from a legit source and will have a link for you to click to update your details, or it could ask you to reply with your information.

Phishing

A fraudulent link is emailed to you. Once you click it, you can either be asked you to fill in your personal info, or it will load malware (malicious software) onto your device. Scammers can get access to your device and your data, including all account linked to your device. This can also be known as Remote Access Scams.

CREDIT LIMIT INCREASE SCAMS

You get a WhatsApp asking if you'd like to do a credit limit increase. To do this, you to send all your personal details. Once you've given all your info, fraudsters are then able to take over your account. Mr Price Money will never ask for your personal details with credit limit communication.
